I was also in a con game that took a canon & fugue approach to variations - PCs played elders, all of whom were available, but they only got a shell of a character and were able to define or redefine the rest, and then bid on items and titles. I was in a group that started with the PCs as various powerful entities across Shadow that united to create a power structure to defend reality, and it was a really interesting first session but the gaming group ended soon after. One way of refreshing the setting is to reboot it - put the PCs in the position of defining and drawing their own Squiggle, as a reaction to Chaos or some other predator/crisis/whatever.

then most people should be able to get by just fine without bothering. If the original idea was that it was too time consuming and most of them get by just fine without bothering. Magic and "psyche" tend to be way overrated by most players in my experience. Or do they simply not care since whatever they want is just a few strides away in shadow? Hot air balloons? Vacuum based explosives? Why not a steam engine on rails to other cities outside of Amber on the same world? Or is there something dark and terrible out there, kept at bay by Amber proper? Sure, there's a good reason they travel shadow with sailing ships and horses, but why give up the convenience and power of better stuff at home? Does electricity work? Or was it only gunpowder that was the hiccup? Do the royals try to gain support from their people with quality of life improvements? Aspirin for everyone, hurrah. I'm not talking about smartphones and atomic energy, but the gunpowder thing shows that there are ways around the physics of home. With the royals' access to science, culture, and fashion Amber could easily evolve. I think rather than a rehash, simply modernize it.

Give it a very free hand, but it make it clear that you as GM will be bringing in interesting complications, and go for it. For magic, I'd be inclined to draw on Jacob Randolph's excellent mage playbook for Dungeon World: If the players all want to play shadow-walkers, throw in Pattern imprint as an intrinsic part of whatever aspect each one has that indicates Amberite heritage. Against their peers, PCs have even-on competitions against the hordes of un-powered humanity et al, they'll tend to win because such people are weak on the scale of the characters. What I'd like to try sometime is keep the characters' position in the ladder of adjectives about the same as always, but say that some kinds of opposition are always weaker than. ADRPG got this right with the attributes, not so much with the powers. The big thing for me is, don't charge players for the baseline.
