This is a documentary, but it’s a comedy, too - and a familydrama and a travelogue and, ultimately, a horror movie. Good movie musicals are not easy to find, so get in the grooveand enjoy the likable “Hairspray,” based on the John Waterscult-classic film and the recent Broadway smash. In the hands ofdirector Sean McNamara, who also did the painfully earnest HilaryDuff vehicle “Raise Your Voice,” it isn’t even a movie so much asan extended commercial for MTV and Skechers shoes and the L.A.outdoor shopping center The Grove, sort of the Las Vegas of malls.PG. Butwow, is this movie mind-numbingly vapid and shrill. They go to class and fight tostick by each other when high school cliques threaten to tear themapart, rendering them BFFs (best friends forever!) no more. Andin these tabloid-friendly times, they are much better role modelsthan Britney/Lindsay/Paris/Nicole. Girls - a very specific niche of girls ages 8-10 - willprobably want to be these four taken-from-the-toy characters. Matt Damon remains a strong, stoicforce in the center as the amnesiac assassin of Robert Ludlum’snovels, still seeking answers about his past. spy intrigue - but it’s so expertlycrafted and the cast is so superb that “Bourne Ultimatum” exceedsall expectations of the genre. It’s allstuff you’ve seen before - car chases, fistfights, internationaljet-setting and spy vs. He’s donesomething astonishing here: He’s made an action film that’s bothdelicate and aggressive, a difficult balance to strike. Paul Greengrass, who alsodirected “The Bourne Supremacy,” as well as the riveting “United93,” continues to prove himself a master of mood. We have easily the best threequel of all in “The BourneUltimatum.” It’s the first threequel of the summer that doesn’tfeel like a dragged-out continuation of a series, but rather aclimactic, satisfying culmination.
